RNG aspect of recipe unlocking doesn't add anything positive to the gameplay loop in a game that is all about planning and problem solving.
And, I have to admit that it doesn't fit at all.
What's more important is how it fits into the gameplay loop. In a game like this, I don't think going with what "makes sense" is what players care about. I just unlock the recipes I want with the map editor every time I start the game now. Then wait 10 minute intervals and play the lottery for the things you actually want. Yep, believe me that after a couple of starts it gets very old to have to run around and collect the same hard drives you've collected before. Might be worth adding a toggle option for it when you start the game, just like skipping the first "noob stage" tutorial bit. I've kinda enjoyed the randomness for my runs so far.īut I do suspect that the next time I start fresh I'll go with everything unlocked. And I would not have an issue if the best recipes were the hardest to unlock either, if only I can be certain that I can unlock them, and I won't get screwed over by RNG and not get what I want after researching 20 hard drives. It would be much more enjoyable and interactive if we did have some sort of a tech tree or another system that allowed us to guarantee unlocks of recipes we are after. You already have a sort of tech tree for the ones that you learn thru research that you are capable of. These are bonus alternative recipes you are finding that were discovered through some alternate means you don't have access to. That way you still get to explore and find hard drives but at least you don't have your time wasted by RNG. This would be helpful for people who take a certain route to the same goal.
